To her knowledge, Timber never saw Joseph Goldstein in the Divinity, though he had made more than one trip up there. If she ever did see him, she would have had no reason to assume he was anything but another Outsider. There would have been no way for her to know that he was the reason she and her fellow Divinity members always had enough to eat. Goldstein was the smartest and most powerful man Luscious knew, which was why he decided to ask for his help with Timberâs situation. He just dreaded telling Goldstein everything else that went along with it, including the fact that the Divinityâwhich, up to that point, had been pivotal in many of Goldsteinâs business affairsâno longer existed.
Before Luscious became Goldsteinâs apprentice, of sorts, he was a seventeen-year-old kid turning tricks for gay men in San Bernardino. Born William Kennedy Jones to a mother whom he never met, Luscious spent his whole life, up until his seventeenth year, growing up in foster care. He ran away from his last foster homeâthough, being he was so close to turning eighteen, itâs doubtful the system went out of its way to find him. After roaming around the streets of San Bernardino for a few weeks, sleeping on benches and eating abandoned leftovers from fast food restaurants, Luscious was charmed into the company of a brutal pimp named Big Daddy Johnson.
Big Daddy Johnson plied his trade on the streets of San Bernardino and, upon meeting Lusciousâwho, at the time, was going by the name Billy K.J.âinvited him to live in his apartment, which wasnât nearly as big or glamorous as the personality he projected. They met at a bar called Leroy Blueâs, which wasnât a gay bar per se, but, for those in the know, it was understood to be a relatively safe environment to have gay encounters. Though he was only seventeen, Luscious managed to get inside Leroy Blueâs on more than one occasionâand it was on one such occasion that he met Big Daddy Johnson.
So far as Luscious knew, Big Daddy Johnson was his boyfriend, because he invited Luscious to stay with him in his apartment, where he promptly relieved him of his virginity. Luscious knew without question how Big Daddy Johnson earned his living, as he watched him deal with his prostitutesâmen and women alikeâboth on the streets and occasionally at home. Big Daddy Johnson was a large figure, with broad shoulders and heavy knuckles. He knew how to be charming, which Luscious enjoyed, but he also knew how to get his way using brute force. Luscious knew the brutal side of Big Daddy Johnson existed, as heâd seen him use it on more than one of his prostitutes, but he always assumed that he would be spared such treatment.
Luscious found out that he himself was one of Big Daddy Johnsonâs prostitutes on the night he dropped him off in front of Leroy Blueâs and told him to go make him some money. Luscious laughed, clearly under the impression that Big Daddy Johnson was joking.
